It's a bit of a mix of both, but he does have an entire dramatic scene of the manga where he makes a point that this is about himself and becoming someone who can never be hurt again and can destroy his enemies, and not for his family or duties or anything. He wants to avoid ever being hurt and humilliated like that again, AND kill everyone who was responsible for causing it in the first place (as well as find out why they were targeted like that).
