HISTORY: Born September 22, 1875 of a Russian mother and a Polish father in occupied Warsaw, Wiktor's young life was none-the-less warm and largely bright. While his mother was not terribly interested in parenting, the family maid was loving and he always had both his sister and his best friend, one of the servants, to fill his days. There was tension, of course, given his father's strict opinions about his abilities as a thaumaturge and largely cold manner but... he grew up relatively happy.

Until a plan to help out his best friend's father backfired tremendously and ended with a loan shark being killed by the two boys together and his father sent him packing to live with his mother in Paris. This plan, initially intending to use Wiktor's fledgling abilities as a thaumaturge to influence the man, failed miserably but it did bring forth his Flaw (Pride) and set him on the path to be the man he is today. It also set off any number of other paths that would one day bring him back to Warsaw on the day of his father's funeral, including attempting to take a second salutor (Paimon), losing touch with reality and spending time in a mental institution because of it (Dr. Seward was very helpful, surprisingly), and eventually turning to the mystic known as Rasputin to heal his connection to his powers and his salutor, Upyr.

FLAWS: Flaws are a very specific thing for a thaumaturge. So while some of Wiktor's normal flaws involve his pride and being rather snarky and vehement when he's pissed off about something, as well as a certain tendency towards Taking Action sometimes without due concern... you can find more on his Salutors page.

ABILITIES
CLASS: Upper ^_^ / Thaumaturge

INVENTORY: the above, the Black Grimoire, and the ability to leave a note of promise because his money comes from his family
PERCEPTION: Keeping a secret around a Thaumaturge is incredibly difficult, because they can sense the traces left on items and in places and read them to be able to know someone's secrets, their emotions, what makes them upset, past moments in their life, etc. including for the dead. And not only can he read those things, but his power will guide him to those traces so he knows where to look.
TRACES: When you focus on certain thoughts or feel strong emotions, those things can leave traces on items of yours. A coin or a fork or a comb can all hold a ton of information about their owner or even someone who happened to be holding them while being thoughtful.
MANIPULATION: Once a thaumaturge has figured out your levers, they can utilize their salutor(s) to tug on it and manipulate you towards a certain decision or action. It's not nearly as simple as just BOOM, now you jump out a window; it has to be in line with your own flaws and faults or desires. That's half the work!
INTENT: A thaumaturge can intentionally leave messages or desires in an item to act as a communication to another thaumaturge. Useful for being sneaky.
FLAWS: Flaws are what draw salutors but they're also what drive a person past normal limits, a blessing and a curse. Thauamaturges seek out Flaws in people as they can be destructive to them especially when they've drawn a wild salutor to the person which can cause harm to whole villages if the problem isn't addressed.
THE COTERIE : An innovation originally thought up by his father, the Coterie is a bonded group of thaumaturges who share everything, and have pledged to stand beside one another in all things. The original intended Coterie had all but one member pass away but Wiktor decided to move forward with the concept as a way of handling the mounting threats facing the thaumaturges of Warsaw. His coterie members are MINDSHARE: He can kind of 'stop time' and exist within a mind space where he can see a person's Flaw and communicate with them, among other things. He can't move around and such but he does have additional time to think if he needs it. He can also go into this space inside his head with another thaumaturge and the two can discuss without anyone else seeing or noticing that time has passed. The members of the Coterie sort of have this going at all times; they share thoughts and secrets and can share each other's power as needed.

The Downside: ... Wiktor spent a lot of time being kinda bonkers because he tried to take on a second Flaw without support to grab a second salutor and it broke him. He's healed since then and now maintains multiple salutors.

Salutors
SALUTORS: They have many names. When Latin was in fashion, a wise man called these creatures 'newcomers'. In popular beliefs, they are sometimes called demons or angels, ghosts, or even deities. I do not know where they come from. They reflect the beliefs and superstitions of people from different regions, even though those people themselves cannot see them. Highly sensitive individuals, like artists, are sometimes able to see their manifestations. Wild salutors change their whereabouts as they follow people's Flaws. People travel more these days... Once, in Saint Petersburg, I saw a Sphinx.

Note: They are not sentient and cannot hold conversations or provide feedback; they're more like thoughtforms, power shaped around human traits and stories that he uses like a tool or a trained pet. He occasionally talks to them or talks about them like that because it's his special interest and he's a bit of a crazy cat lady about it. [all]
